Bí đỏ gọt vỏ rồi cắt thành những khúc vuông vừa ăn. Bí đỏ có hai loại phổ biến nhưng mình khuyên các ban nên chọn loại bí đỏ nhỏ có hình dạng như trái bầu, loại bí này sẽ ngọt và dẻo hơn loại bí to trái.
Cho bí đỏ vào nồi rồi cho lượng nước vừa đủ ngập bí thêm 1/2 muỗng canh dầu ăn đập nắp và nấu với lửa lớn. Sau khi nước sôi thì hạ lửa và nấu tới khi nước cạn bớt và bí mềm. Nếu bí đã mềm mà nước còn nhiều thì múc bớt nước ra. Hỗn hợp sền sệt hoặc là hơi khô thì mới đúng chất bí um. Dùng đũa đâm vào miếng bí hoặc dùng muỗng khoáy đều để biết là bí đã mềm hay chưa. Lúc bí mềm thì cho gia vị vào, đặc biệt món ăn không nêm nước mắm nha mọi người.
Khi bí đã khô và đã hơi nát thì mọi người cho hánh lá và tiêu vào rồi tắt bếp. Vậy là xong rồi, múc ra dĩa và thưởng thức thôi nào. Có thêm ít tiêu nên rất là thơm luôn nhé.
